Sport Science: Toney Vs Couture

alt

Later on today or in the early hours of Sunday morning - depending on which side of the Atlantic you live in, the highly-anticipated UFC 118 will be held at the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts, United States.

While the main card for this event is headlined by the Frankie Edgar (c) vs.  B.J. Penn fight. The main attraction and focus will be on the co headliner, which will feature the debut in UFC and MMA events of former boxing (middleweight & Cruiserweight) champ – James Toney who will be going in the cage against  the former UFC champion (heavyweight & light heavyweight)  Randy Couture.

At the UFC weighing-in a very flabby James Toney took to the scales. Looking at Toney you have to wonder about all the hype and his serious training. Toney stepped on stage Friday at the UFC 118 weigh-in and checked in at a ridiculous 237 pounds. That matches his heaviest weight ever as a boxer. Its 20 pounds heavier than his last boxing match just 11 months ago against Matthew Greer. Keep in mind, Toney spent most of his boxing career between 160-175 pounds. At barely 6-feet tall, 237 pounds is a lot to carry.

There is no denying that Toney is a strong fast puncher but in a sport were you have to be light and quick on your feet to avoid take downs – well that flab is certainly not going to help.

Sport Science: Toney vs. Couture's Punching Power

Sport Science breaks down the difference in punching power in James Toney and Randy Couture in which they conclude that Toney's punch has 300 pounds more force than "The Natural" on the other hand Couture displays a fitness level of an athlete half his age.
